This was one of several Valentine's Day projects that came home from school. I was pleased that Mommy and Daddy made the cut this time, as we were left off the list of things Andrew was grateful for on his Thanksgiving card. (That list? Our car, milk, candy and Dora. He has never even seen Dora the Explorer, so that was a bit of a blow.) The other names mentioned on the valentine are some of his classmates, most of whom Andrew refuses to admit exist when we ask him about school, so this is encouraging.
I was also glad that his teachers managed to catch Andrew in a "loving" mood. Last week I tried to make several valentines with Andrew to send to family. I asked him what he loved about the people in his life, envisioning an adorable card with a funny but affectionate message from a 3-year old. The results were a little less heartwarming than I hoped for:
Me: What do you love about [his BFF] Barrett?
Andrew: His toys.
Me: Well, his toys are fun, but what do you like about him?
Andrew: His eyes. [Said while gluing a googly eye, which, in my mind, undermines his sincerity]
Me: OK, well what do you love about Daddy?
Andrew: His body. [Ooookay...]
Me: How about Grammy, what do you love about Grammy?
Andrew: Gordon.
Me: Yes, Gordon is very special. What do you love about him?
Andrew: His glasses.
Me [final attempt]: And Gami and Gampi, what do you love about them?
Andrew: Their kitchen stuff.
Me [thinking maybe he meant the cabinet of toys kept in their kitchen]: What do you love in their kitchen?
Andrew: Their dishwasher.
Me: [laughing at the futility of this exercise] What do you love about their dishwasher, Andrew?
Andrew: It's beautiful. So sorry, family. I will try again next year. :)
